Unlike other calculators, we automatically apply a safety margin (10%–15%). Why?

Settling & Compaction: Mulch is an organic, airy material. When installed and watered, it settles. Without this margin, your 3" layer would end up looking like a 2" layer.

Terrain Irregularities: Gardens aren't perfectly flat. Roots and uneven terrain consume more material than the plan indicates.

Logistics: For large front-range projects, it's more expensive to pay for a second shipment for 5 missing yards than to order the correct volume from the start.

Organic Mulch (Our Recommendation): We use shredded wood (hardwood, cedar) because it enriches Colorado soil, which is typically poor in organic matter. It also helps retain moisture in our arid climate.

Shredded vs. Nuggets: In windy areas like Brighton or Thornton, we recommend shredded mulch (such as Gorilla Hair). Its fibers interlock and stay in place, unlike nuggets that can float or be blown away.
