WHY PRECISION MATTERS: THE CLEVER WAY

We calculate more than just volume; we calculate results. In Colorado, the success of a landscaping project depends on preparation and knowledge of the terrain. Our calculator incorporates real-world factors that most websites ignore.

Understanding Our Safety Margin (Compaction & Loss)

Unlike other calculators, we automatically apply a safety margin (10%–15%). Why?

  • Settling & Compaction: Mulch is an organic, airy material. When installed and watered, it settles. Without this margin, your 3" layer would end up looking like a 2" layer.

  • Terrain Irregularities: Gardens aren't perfectly flat. Roots and uneven terrain consume more material than the plan indicates.

  • Logistics: For large front-range projects, it's more expensive to pay for a second shipment for 5 missing yards than to order the correct volume from the start.

  • Moisture Retention: Reduces watering frequency in summer.

  • Temperature Control: Protects roots from extreme Colorado frosts.

  • Weed Suppression: A 3" layer blocks the sunlight needed for weeds to germinate.

Key Benefits for Your Property

Organic vs. Synthetic: What’s Best for Colorado?

Organic Mulch (Our Recommendation): We use shredded wood (hardwood, cedar) because it enriches Colorado soil, which is typically poor in organic matter. It also helps retain moisture in our arid climate.

Shredded vs. Nuggets: In windy areas like Brighton or Thornton, we recommend shredded mulch (such as Gorilla Hair). Its fibers interlock and stay in place, unlike nuggets that can float or be blown away.
